WSSD Board Meeting Notes April 12

The WSSD board had a short meeting this month. The video can be found on youtube here. The new superintendent’s remarks start at about 27:30.

The student representative talked about the SRS PTO activities and the NPE Reading Olympics as well as the first day of school at the Middle and High schools. She also mentioned a successful movie night at the high school.

The superintendent’s report covered vaccinations for 16+ year old high school students. All relevant parents should have been contacted in multiple ways about an interest survey for the Covid vaccine. It must be submitted by today (the 13th), so the school district can report how many doses it needs from Springfield pharmacy. They’re hoping it will take place somewhere around April 20th (but no details yet).

The superintendent also said that planning is underway for a community vaccination clinic at the schools, but there are no details yet.

The focus topic covered the summer music program’s 40th year. This will take place from June 21-July 15 with students attending M/W or Tu/Th for 90-120 minutes at the middle school. There will be both in person and virtual options for those rising 3rd graders – 12th graders. There will be many ensembles available and new programs for bucket drumming, ukelele and steel drums. The final concert will be on July 15th.

The board approved Dr. Wagner Marseille as the next superintendent, who gave introductory remarks.

The board approved routine business. One note is that the district is planning overnight trips for next year, but warn parents to study the cancellation policies carefully as they vary and it is not yet clear what trips will be possible.

There was a final question about the numbers of students in the high school. About 800 of the 1200 students are now attending in person.
